Flute maestro Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia conferred top Birla Award
Renowned flautist and music director Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia was conferred the ‘Aditya Vikram Birla Kaa Shikhar Puraskar’ for his contributions to music and catapulting it on the global arena. The Sangit Kala Kendra (SKK) President Rajashree Birla conferred the honour on Pt. Chaurasia, 85, at a glittering function, when she described him as the “doyen of the Bansuri (flute), whose status as a flautist is unmatchable”. Two other promising young artists, tabla player Ojas Adhiya and sarangi player Sabir Khan were presented with the ‘Aditya Vikram Birla Mala Kiran Puraskar’ each.
International Emmy Awards 2023: Netflix’s ‘Vir Das Landing’ wins Best Comedy
Renowned comedian and actor Vir Das and Derry Girls Season 3 won the International Emmy for Comedy at the International Emmy Awards 2023. Vir Das won the award for his Netflix comedy special titled Vir Das: Landing. This marked Vir’s second International Emmy nomination. Das and Derry Girls were nominated alongside France’s Le Flambeau annd Argentina’s El Encargado. Vir Das has appeared in over 100 stand-up shows and boasts multiple stand-up specials. He has also acted in over 15 films.

Covid warriors given Indira Gandhi Peace Prize
The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, 2022, was awarded jointly to the Indian Medical Association and the Trained Nurses Association of India as representatives of the Covid warriors in the country. Former Vice President M Hamid Ansari presented the award to Sharad Kumar Agarwal, the president of the Indian Medical Association, and Roy K George, the president of the Trained Nurses Association of India.
Song on Millets featuring PM Modi nominated for Grammy award
A song on millets featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been nominated for a Grammy award in the best global music performance category. The song highlights the health benefits and the government’s efforts to promote the nutritious cereal. The song “Abundance in Millets” celebrates the International Year of the Millets, which was declared by the United Nations this year. It is composed by Mumbai-born singer-songwriter Falguni Shah and her husband and singer Gaurav Shah.

India-born author Nandini Das is winner of 2023 British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding
India-born author Nandini Das has been named the winner of the 2023 British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding, a leading international non-fiction prize, for her book ‘Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire’. Das is a Professor of English literatre at the University of Oxford. The winning book is her debut and has been described by critics as the “true origin story of Britain and India told through England’s first diplomatic mission to the Mughal courts”.

The British Academy Book Prize, formerly known as the Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize, was established in 2013 to reward and celebrate the best works of non-fiction that demonstrate rigour and originality and have contributed to public understanding of other world cultures and their interaction.

Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua crowned Miss Universe 2023
Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios has been crowned Miss Universe for the year 2023, marking her country’s first win at the international beauty pageant. The 72nd edition of the Miss Universe pageant was held at the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador. Miss Thailand Anntonia Porsild emerged the first runner-up and Miss Australia Moraya Wilson was named the second runner-up at the event. USA’s R’Bonney Gabriel, who held the title of Miss Universe for the year 2022, crowned Palacios. According to Miss Universe, Palacios is a 23-year-old mental health activist and audiovisual producer from Managua, Nicaragua.
