National Poker Series: India medalist Anirban records highest cash prize won by any Indian
One of India’s renowned poker players, Anirban Das recently scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a cash prize of a whopping $430,200 in the World Series of Poker 2023. Anirban earned the spot to represent India at the prestigious WSOP held in Vegas, USA by winning a silver medal at The National Poker Series India 2023. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a series of poker tournaments held annually in Paradise, Nevada and, since 2004, sponsored by Caesars Entertainment.

Prof. Thalappil Pradeep of IIT Madras won the international EniAward
Prof. T. Pradeep from the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has won the prestigious Eni Award 2023 to discover the advanced sustainable and affordable nano-scale materials for the removal of toxic contaminants from water. Eni Award is considered among the top global honors for scientific research in energy and environment. It is given in three categories-Energy Transition, Energy Frontiers and Advanced Environmental Solutions. Previous awardees include Nobel laureates, Sir Harold W Kroto, Alan Heeger and Theodor Wolfgang Hänsch as well as professor C N R Rao, who is also a Bharat Ratna awardee. Prof Pradeep has been recognized earlier with the Padma Shrii, Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water and Nikkei Asia Prize.

Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission bags SKOCH Award 2023
The Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) has bagged the SKOCH Award under the theme “State of Governance India 2047” in Gold category for its outstanding efforts in creating marketing avenues for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the Union Territory. The SKOCH award marks a significant milestone for JKRLM, being the first award received since the inception of the scheme. The JKRLM has introduced several groundbreaking initiatives that have transformed the lives of countless women associated with Self Help Groups. The AVSAR scheme, Umeed Women’s Haat, and District Rural Haat, SHG products available on e-commerce platforms are prime examples of these initiatives, which have not only provided a platform for SHGs to showcase their products but have also opened up new marketing avenues for them. India’s chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence, Karnataka. Gopichand, along with four other eminent Indians, were bestowed with the honour by President Droupadi Murmu for their contribution to nationbuilding

Manisha Kalyan, Lallianzuala Changte wins AIFF Player of the Year awards
Indian football team midfielder Lallianzuala Changte has been named the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2022-23. He beat Nandhakumar Sekar and Naorem Mahesh Singh of East Bengal to win the award. While Manisha Kalyan won her second consecutive Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

British children’s writer and post Michael Rosen (77) has been awarded the prestigious PEN Printer prize 2023
Pen Printer Prize:
This prestigious award is given to a writer from the UK, lreland , and the Commonwealth whose is committed to a fearless exposition of truth about contemporary life. This prize was named after English writer Harold Printer. It was established in 2009. Some of the previous award-winning writers are Maloris Blackman (2022), Tsitsi Dangarembga (2021) Hanif Kureishi (2010), Salman Rushdia (2014), and Lemn Sissay(2019).
King Charles, Camilla award ‘Elephant Whisperers’ director, Indian wildlife
Kings Charles III and Queen Camilla presented the prestigious Mark Shand Award and the Tara Award to Oscar-winning filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves and a wildlife conservation group from India, at the 2023 Animal Ball in London. Of the two prizes presented at the event, the Mark Shand Award went to The Real Elephant Collective (TREC), a community of 70 adivasi artists and wildlife conservationists. And the Tara Award, inspired by the bond between elephants and humans, was given to Kartiki Gonsalves, the director of the Academy Award-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers. ”
Rajindar Singh Dhatt honoured with the Points of Light Award 2023
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak honored Rajindar Singh Dhatt with a Points of Light award. Dhatt was one of the last surviving Sikh soldiers who fought in World War II. Dhatt aged 101 was recognised for his service and work running the ‘Undivided Indian ExServicemen’s Association’ to help bring together British Indian war veterans. The Points of Light award recognize outstanding people whose service is making a difference in their communities and whose stories can inspire others towards innovative solutions to social challenges in their own communities and beyond

Singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan receives honorary doctorate in UK
Noted singer and music composer, Shankar Mahadevan was conferred with an honorary doctorate by Birmingham City University (BCU) in England in recognition of his contribution to music and the arts. The 56-year-old, who is best known for songs like ‘Breathless’, ‘Mitwa’ and ‘Lakshya’, was honoured by the BCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Plowden at the ceremony. In 2019 he was honoured with Padma Shri Award for his contributions to Film Music under the category Arts. He was awarded three times National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2000, 2007, 2012. In 2011, he was conferred Lata Mangeshkar Award by Government of Andhra Pradesh.
