In Shooting, Indian shooter Anish Bhanwala won the bronze medal in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event at the ISSF World Cup Final 2023 in Doha, Qatar. Competing at the Lusail Shooting Range, Anish Bhanwala scored 27 out of 35 for third place in the final. It was also the first medal for India in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event in the ISSF World Cup Final history.
World Wushu Championship 2023: Roshibina Devi wins silver
Asian Games silver medallist Roshibina Devi lost to Vietnam’s Thi Thu Nguyen in the final of the women’s 60kg category at the 16th World Wushu Championship. In the previous meeting between the two at the Asian Games semifinal, the Indian defeated the Vietnamese. India ended its campaign with one silver and two bronze. Earlier, Kushal Kumar won a bronze medal in men’s 48kg Sanda category after losing to Vietnamese Hai Tran Huy. Gautam Gambhir has left LSG after two seasons to return to KKR as mentor. Gambhir’s earlier stint with KKR, spanning from 2011 to 2017, etched a historic chapter. ICC Board suspends Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of ICC with immediate effect
The ICC Board with immediate effect, the global governing body of the sport announced, has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC Board observed that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka. The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course. Note: Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe had sacked the SLC management and appointed former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga as the head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the cricket board. However, that was overturned by the Court of Appeal.

Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel, who had joined the team on a six-month contract in June, has resigned from his post. Morkel’s decision to step down comes in the aftermath of Babar Azam and Co failing to qualify for the knockouts of the 2023 ODI World Cup after winning only four games from their nine outings. It was a fifth straight time at the ODI World Cup that Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals and a campaign that has opened a can of worms back home.

Three cricketing greats and standout performers in the history of the game – legendary opener Virender Sehwag, former Indian Women Test skipper Diana Edulji and Sri Lanka’s iconic star Aravinda de Silva are the latest inductees to be added to the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the name of the three legends of cricket as the latest inductees. Sehwag, a destructive opener of the modern era, holds a record that is still hard to match, the first Indian with a two Triple centuries. The second inductee Edulji captained India for almost three decades, and as a left-arm orthodox spinner claimed 100 wickets while making 54 international appearances. Edulji took up the role of to create opportunities for employment for women cricketers. The third inductee was a winner of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with Sri Lanka in 1996 – Aravinda de Silva. The Sri Lankan batter was known for his consistency, scoring 20 Test centuries during an 18-year international career which is the third most by any Sri Lanka men’s player. The ICC Hall of Fame honours the greatest international cricketers throughout the long history of the sport, and the enduring legacies of de Silva, Edulji and Sehwag see them join as inductees number 110, 111 and 112 respectively.

AIFF sacks its secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran due to breach of interest
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has sacked secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran due to “breach of trust”. Prabhakaran’s sacking comes 14 months after his appointment to the high-profile job even as the national federation did not mention what the breach of trust was that prompted the action. The AIFF Deputy Secretary, Mr M Satyanarayan, will take charge as Acting Secretary General of AIFF with immediate effect.

Saudi Arabia will host the FIFA World Cup 2034, the president of the International Football Federation (FIFA) announced. The next two editions of the FIFA World Cup are set to be hosted in Africa (Morocco) and Europe (Portugal and Spain) – with three celebratory matches played in South America (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) in 2030 and in Asia (Saudi Arabia) in 2034. Three countries from the continent of North America, the United States of America, Mexico and Canada will host the FIFA Worl Cup 2026.
Sunil Narine retires from international cricket
West Indies bowling all-rounder Sunil Narine has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 35-year-old last played for West Indies in a T201 in August 2019. Narine played six Tests, 65 ODIs and 51 T20ls and took 165 international wickets. He helped West Indies to their first T20 World Cup title in 2012 – their first World Cup win across formats since 1979 – with nine wickets in the competition. He also announced his retirement from List A cricket, stating that winning the current Super50 Cup will be perfect send-off.

India beat Japan to win Women’s Asian Champions Trophy
India beat Japan 4-0 in the final in Ranch to win 2023 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey title. Sangita Kumari, Neha Goyal, Lalremsiami and Vandana Katariya scored a goal each for India in the final. It is India’s second Womens Asian Champions Trophy hockey title. India had won the 2016 edition after defeating China 2-1 in the final. This was team’s second silverware under head coach Janneke Schopman after the FIH Nations Cup victory.

Inzamam resigns as chairman of Pakistan cricket team’s selection committee
The legendary Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned as the chairman of the national selection committee after Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initiated an inquiry to probe if his association with a company that manages a number of national team players pertains to conflict of interest.
